Weekly class music lessons, delivered by specialist teachers, are provided for all pupils from Year 1 to Year 8.

Our inclusive curriculum covers a wide variety of styles and periods, linking with other subjects to integrate music into the overall educational experience.

Our recently refurbished Music School, completed in November 2023, stands as a testament to our commitment to Music and the Arts.

The building now features a fully equipped classroom/rehearsal room, four beautifully designed instrumental/ensemble rooms, and six practice rooms.

It is designed to inspire creativity and collaboration, providing an ideal environment for pupils to practise, learn, and discover music in various forms and genres.

A young boy in a white dress shirt and black pants sits on a piano bench, playing the grand piano on a stage under bright stage lights. With dark curtains and wooden benches in the background, the scene is filled with the enchanting essence of music.

In addition to class music lessons, personalised one-to-one instrumental lessons are offered for all orchestral instruments, piano, and singing. Delivered by specialist instrumentalists, these sessions allow pupils to receive tailored guidance at their own pace, with the option to enter ABRSM or Trinity Music examinations for a sense of achievement.

The Music Department, as part of the school’s Enrichment Programme, runs various music groups such as Junior, Senior, and Cantabile Choir, Orchestra, Rock Band, Brass Ensemble, and Woodwind Ensemble. These opportunities are tailored to each cohort, with at least one or two Musical Productions each year to hone musical and dramatic skills.

The Music Department has been brilliantly supportive in recognising and developing our children’s musical abilities, and by providing such a wide range of musical opportunities for them.

Music at The Downs Malvern

Music at The Downs Malvern is an integral part of daily school life, woven into the academic calendar through Assemblies, Chapel Services, Concerts, Musical Productions, and House Competitions. This not only provides platforms for pupils to showcase their talents but also creates a sense of pride and community. Every child, regardless of musical background, is encouraged to participate, ensuring each pupil experiences the thrill of performance during the school year.

In essence, the refurbishment transforms traditional education, creating a dynamic and inclusive environment in the Music School. Comprehensive music lessons, personalised instrumental tuition, and numerous performance opportunities encourage a love for music beyond the classroom, enriching the overall educational experience for every pupil. All pupils deserve to be heard, and we ensure numerous opportunities for them to do so.
