Led by highly qualified specialist teaching staff, Science is taught as a distinct subject throughout the Prep School, with learning predominantly taking place in one of our three state-of-the-art laboratories.

By Year 7, the subject is divided into Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, preparing pupils for Common Entrance exams.

Our pupils engage in a variety of enriching activities that foster critical scientific skills. They are encouraged to enquire, predict, and hypothesise, and as they progress through the curriculum, they take increasing responsibility for their own learning, reflecting on their progress and working cooperatively in groups on a variety of tasks.

At The Downs Malvern, the mission of our Science department is to inspire a love for the subject, equip pupils with the tools to understand and explain the world around them, and demonstrate the value of science in their future lives.

Throughout their time with us, pupils will deepen their knowledge of the subject and learn to apply it to new situations, an essential skill in our increasingly technology-driven world. Our modern, high-quality laboratories and optimal class sizes enhance this learning experience.

A teacher in a colorful tie-dye lab coat assists two young students, all wearing safety goggles, in a science experiment involving a Bunsen burner in a science classroom. The students and teacher are engaged and focused on the activity.

Each year, our Science Challenge coincides with British Science Week and features our annual Great Egg Launch. This hugely popular event is tremendous fun and sees teams of pupils applying their physics knowledge to create devices capable of propelling an egg the furthest distance without breaking.

We are fortunate to have extensive school grounds, which offer a wide range of habitats, providing ample opportunities for fascinating fieldwork studies. Pupils also enjoy annual trips to Batsford Arboretum and the Cheltenham Science Festival, further enhancing their real-world scientific understanding.

Our children have changed significantly; they have greater confidence, are noticeably happy with a marked improvement in their academic performance.
