The Modern Languages department encourages a genuine interest in diverse languages and cultures, empowering children to excel in one or two languages based on their unique abilities and interests.
Our dynamic approach ensures lessons are educational, enjoyable, and practical, providing ample opportunities for hands-on practice.
We cultivate independent learning, nurturing a thirst for knowledge and encouraging participation in activities that showcase individual skills. Emphasising fluency and authentic accents, we prepare children for a seamless transition to senior school at 13.
Curriculum Overview
French: Introduced from Early Years to Year 6, evolving into sets in Year 7.
German & Spanish: Pupils choose a second language in Year 7.
Our curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum and ISEB syllabus, ensuring success for both beginners and those with prior experience. Lessons are predominantly conducted in the target language, utilising diverse resources and activities to foster a ‘have a go’ attitude and remove the fear of making mistakes. Efficient learning and revision habits are instilled through ongoing assessments, weekly tests, and end-of-term exams, preparing pupils for external examinations and senior school entry, including scholarships.
Languages Day
Year 8’s ‘Languages Day’ is an annual highlight, where pupils organise French, German, and Spanish cafés. The entire school community orders food and drinks in each language, with games and themed lessons creating an immersive experience. It’s a true crowd-pleaser, showcasing the enthusiasm and achievements of our language learners.
