Pastoral Excellence

Personalised care, small classes, and a diverse range of extra-curricular activities; discover a truly holistic education where every child thrives.

At The Downs Malvern, pastoral care is central to our educational ethos, reflecting our commitment to every pupil’s holistic wellbeing.

Our small class sizes from Nursery through Year 8 are a key feature of our educational approach. This intimate setting allows teachers to deeply understand each pupil, fostering a more personalised and flexible educational experience. By knowing their pupils well, teachers can tailor education to individual interests and needs, enhancing engagement and personal growth. This nurturing environment facilitates quick identification and timely interventions for both social and academic needs, ensuring every pupil receives the attention and support they need to flourish.

We are dedicated to providing a balanced education that extends beyond the classroom. We encourage every pupil to discover their passions and nurture their talents through a diverse range of activities, including Sports, Arts, Entrepreneurial Studies, and Outdoor Adventures like Mountain Biking, and Farming. Our staff, familiar with each pupil’s interests, actively support them, ensuring that every achievement is recognised and celebrated, promoting a culture of encouragement and personal development.

Pastoral care is excellent. Buddy systems ensure that new children slip in seamlessly and togetherness is evident everywhere; from the boarding house to the family-style dining at lunchtime.

Talk Education

Lunchtimes at The Downs Malvern enhance community spirit and learning. Senior pupils serve food, promoting etiquette, while mixed-year group dining in the Prep School fosters a family atmosphere and role modelling. The Pre-Prep’s ‘Golden Spatula’ award for excellent table manners adds excitement, encouraging all children’s best efforts!

For children who face challenges in certain aspects of school life, we offer supportive initiatives. ‘The Hub’ is a space for those who find socializing challenging, providing an opportunity to develop communication skills and build confidence in a supportive environment. We also offer personalised guidance by assigning pupils to teachers who are trained in the Graydin Coaching Course, and many of our staff are equipped with Mental Health First Aid training to support our pupils effectively.

At The Downs Malvern, we strive for academic excellence grounded in the happiness and support of each child. Recognising that a child thrives when they feel heard and valued, our approach centres on nurturing their wellbeing. Our philosophy is clear: the foundation of a successful educational journey begins with happiness, guiding every decision we make to ensure a fulfilling experience for every pupil. We truly feel that there is not a better place for a child to thrive than here at The Downs Malvern.

FAQs

What does pastoral care look like on a daily basis?

Pastoral care at The Downs Malvern is woven naturally into each day. Teachers know their pupils well enough to spot when someone needs reassurance, a challenge, or just a friendly check-in. Small classes mean children are noticed, listened to and supported throughout lessons, at break times and around the school. It’s a steady, thoughtful approach that helps pupils feel secure, understood and ready to get the most out of their day.

How do you support pupils’ mental health and emotional wellbeing?

We support pupils’ mental health and emotional wellbeing through clear, joined-up pastoral care. Weekly staff meetings with a pastoral focus allow teachers to share concerns early and plan the right support. Our ELSA-trained assistant offers additional guidance for children who may need extra reassurance, and both parents and pupils can access our Wellbeing Hub for advice and support. Small class sizes mean staff know every child well and can quickly spot when someone needs encouragement, a quiet conversation or a bit of extra help to feel secure and confident.

How do you help new pupils settle in socially?

Each new child is paired with a buddy and gently introduced to school routines and friendships. Staff provide close support, and our small class sizes foster genuine connections quickly.

Is pastoral care different for boarding pupils?

Boarding pupils receive extended pastoral support from house staff and tutors, with a strong focus on emotional wellbeing, independence, and a sense of home-from-home care.

How do teachers identify when a child needs extra support?

Teachers know their pupils exceptionally well and are trained to spot signs of emotional or social struggle. Concerns are addressed quickly through collaboration with parents and pastoral leads.

Does your pastoral approach support academic progress too?

Absolutely. A child who feels happy, safe, and understood is more confident in the classroom. Our ethos nurtures both academic and emotional growth, they go hand in hand.
