Elite & Recreational Sports and PE

Whether recreational or elite, our first-class facilities, expert coaching, and busy calendar of events ensure that every child has the opportunity to enjoy sport and achieve their maximum potential.

Sport forms the cornerstone of our educational experience, providing a holistic approach to health, fitness, and character development.

With a commitment to developing well-rounded individuals, we ensure that each child receives comprehensive physical education provision, beginning in Pre-prep.

In line with the National Curriculum, our PE programme encompasses a variety of activities, including swimming, gymnastics, athletics, and fitness, balancing indoor and outdoor sessions to meet the developmental needs of each age group. These sessions seamlessly integrate with our termly sports, promoting a cohesive and progressive approach to physical development and cultivating physical, mental, and emotional well-being. We create an environment where every child can explore their passions and establish the groundwork for a healthy, active lifestyle well beyond their school years.

The benefits of our PE curriculum extend beyond the obvious health advantages. Sport instils vital life skills such as teamwork, leadership, resilience, and the ability to handle both success and defeat with grace. These early experiences help shape positive habits that contribute to the long-term well-being of our pupils.

Sport at The Downs Malvern

We encourage our children to engage in their physical well-being and growth through a diverse sports programme that emphasises enjoyment as the core aspect of activities, focusing on variety, progression, and self-interest. The Downs Malvern is fortunate to have a skilled team of sports coaches dedicated to ensuring each child feels valued and encouraging them to reach their full potential.

We have enjoyed many sporting successes over the past few years, from unbeaten rugby teams at the Rosslyn Park 7s to our Under 13 girls’ hockey team, achieving third place in the IAPS National Finals – a fantastic achievement for a prep school hockey team. We have also celebrated many individual successes at National Athletics and Cross-Country events, and we even boast the Under 13 boys’ shot put and discus champion in our ranks!

Winter sports at The Downs include football, rugby, hockey, netball, and cross-country, while in the summer, cricket, athletics, and tennis make up the programme. Our junior football teams train regularly and take part in regional fixtures, helping pupils develop teamwork, confidence and a sense of sporting camaraderie.

We also co-host the prestigious Mercia Prep Schools’ Athletics Championships every June with our sister school Malvern College, which is the qualifying event for the Nationals. Children are encouraged to take part in sporting activities outside school, and we have many close links with local sports clubs.

We boast outstanding facilities, including a spacious sports hall, access to Malvern College’s 25m indoor pool, an Astroturf field, and extensive grounds set within the magnificent surroundings of the Malvern Hills, perfect for cross-country running and mountain biking.
