The Downs Light Railway

Discover the Downs Light Railway, the oldest privately owned miniature railway in the world! Providing pupils with hands-on mechanical engineering experience for almost a century.

Established in 1925, the Downs Light Railway is now almost 100 years old and provides pupils at The Downs Malvern with a unique opportunity to build, operate and maintain a working steam railway, complete with a tunnel, station, and points, which stretch for over a quarter of a mile around the school grounds.

As part of our extracurricular provision, Railway exists within our Saturday morning Hobbies programme and continues to grow in popularity year on year; offering timeless lessons in engineering and providing a nostalgic antidote to the relentless evolution of modern technology.

From the thrill and responsibility of operating a passenger-hauling locomotive to the broader implications for subjects such as maths, science, design technology, history, and geography, the railway serves as a multifaceted educational tool. Additionally, it has provided a source of inspiration for pupils in art and English, creating a holistic learning environment that extends far beyond its tracks.

Central to the heart of the Downs Light Railway is the invaluable relationship between the pupils and the dedicated volunteers who tirelessly maintain it. This mutual connection forms the linchpin of the railway’s existence and allows pupils to take on the sort of responsibility seldom encountered in modern life. Witnessing the pupils flourish as they tackle the challenges inherent in keeping the steam railway running efficiently is undeniably satisfying.

This could be the best quirk we’ve ever seen in a school! The Downs Light Railway was built in 1925 and it is wonderfully bonkers and charming. How many children can say they’ve driven a steam train before the age of 10? Pupils learn to operate it, help with repairs, work on the track and even build carriages (which led to a D&T scholarship to Bloxham for one pupil).
