Preparing for Prep: Starting September with Confidence

Starting a new school can bring excitement, uncertainty and more than a few butterflies for both children and parents! For those joining The Downs Malvern or transitioning from Pre-Prep into Prep School, new teachers, classrooms, routines and friendships can make September feel significant.

The aim is not to remove every worry or every feeling of new school anxiety, but to help children feel prepared and certain that support is available. Confidence grows through familiarity, positive relationships and recognising small successes.

Talk Calmly About September

Children often take their emotional cue from adults, so speak positively, but do not pressure your child to feel excited. Listen and allow questions to arise naturally.

Rather than dismissing a worry, say: “It is normal to feel nervous before something new,” or, “You will not be expected to know everything on your first day.” This shows that worries can be managed.

Create Familiarity Before the First Day

It is a good idea to discuss simple details such as who will greet your child, where they will put their bag and whom they can ask for help.

At The Downs Malvern, this familiarity begins before term. Our New Pupils’ Tea, held the day before term starts, gives children and parents a relaxed opportunity to meet key staff, particularly form teachers, and to become familiar with their new environment by exploring their classrooms.

Prefects and members of our Year 8 leadership team also attend, and their friendly presence offers reassurance while showing new pupils something important about life at The Downs Malvern: children here look after one another. Kindness is not simply a value displayed around the school, it is visible in the way pupils notice, include and support others.

Parents can ask questions, share concerns and build relationships with the adults caring for their child. Most importantly, each family is welcomed into the community before the first lesson has even begun.

Rebuild Routines Gently

Gradually restoring routines during the final two weeks of the holidays can make returning to school much easier. For younger children, moving bedtimes and waking times smoothly, practising getting dressed and preparing uniform and bags is time well spent.

A Simple Summer Checklist

  • Talk positively and calmly about September.
  • Reintroduce bedtime and morning routines gradually.
  • Prepare uniform, bags and equipment early.
  • Talk through the first day.
  • Reassure your child that nerves are normal.
  • Remind them who they can approach for help.
  • Share significant worries with the school.

Friendships, Buddies and Belonging

“Will I make friends?” is a common childhood worry. Reassure them that friendships take time and need not be settled on the first day.

Every pupil joining The Downs Malvern in September is assigned a “buddy”. In the first weeks, buddies guide new pupils around school, explain routines, help them join activities and make sure they always have someone to turn to. This helps the unfamiliar quickly become manageable.

Our pupils understand the importance of welcoming newcomers. They notice when someone needs encouragement and know that inviting them into a game, walking with them to a lesson or sitting beside them at lunch can transform their day. Our values of Kindness, Respect and Courage are lived through these everyday actions.

A Calm First-Morning Goodbye

A warm, confident and reasonably brief goodbye shows that school is a safe, positive place. Once your child has been welcomed, allow the routine to begin. Showing trust in your child and the school provides powerful reassurance.

How The Downs Malvern Helps Every Child Settle In

At The Downs Malvern, pastoral care sits quietly at the centre of school life: It is found in how pupils are greeted, how a form teacher notices a change in mood and how a concern is followed up before it grows.

The form teacher provides a familiar point of contact, supported by our pastoral team, ELSA-trained School Listener and School Counsellor. Houseparents and matrons provide additional care for boarders.

As Deputy Head Pastoral, a central part of my role is ensuring every child feels safe, known and ready to embrace school life, and I work closely with pupils, parents and colleagues so that the right support is provided at the right time.

It is important to remember that children settle differently. One may find confidence in the classroom, while another discovers their place through sport, music, drama, outdoor learning or boarding. We are highly experienced at finding those points of connection and helping each child to build from them.

Open communication with parents is key. It shows children that the adults around them are working together and that asking for help is a strength.

Confidence Comes One Step at a Time

A confident September does not mean having no nerves. It means feeling prepared, known and supported enough to take the next step.

At The Downs Malvern, we give children time to find their place and help families become part of our community. With patient guidance and warm relationships, first-day butterflies will give way to friendship, independence and a real sense of belonging.
