Now fully embracing life at Malvern College, Old Downians, Danai and Lauren, took time to reflect on their experiences at The Downs Malvern, the transition to senior school, and what they are looking forward to next. Both were awarded scholarships at TDM, which gave them additional opportunities to take on responsibilities and pursue their passions.
A Seamless Leap: The Prep-to-Senior Transition
As an avid sportsperson, many of Lauren’s standout moments were on the sports field. During her time at The Downs Malvern, her team came third in the National hockey finals, beating Repton and Millfield on the way, and she also competed in the athletics national finals in hurdles achieving a spectacular 6th place!
Being scholars gave both pupils additional opportunities to develop. Danai took on responsibilities in his House, playing a central role in organising activities, showing leadership and embracing his new role as a role model to younger pupils. A key moment for him was signing up for the whole school talent show which, by his own admission, pushed him firmly outside his comfort zone but played a big role in helping to build his confidence. This self-assuredness was later personified in his appointment as Head Boy in Year 8.
Academic Continuity: From Year 8 Projects to Year 9 Success
For Lauren, she recalls this period as one where she honed vital skills in academics. In Year 8, she completed a project of her choice and later applied that experience directly to her Year 9 research on the genetics of cardiovascular endurance at Malvern College.
Although for many children, the progression to senior school can be an understandably anxious time, transitioning to Malvern College felt seamless for both. Danai says, “I was fortunate to have my friends alongside me. I was already familiar with the facilities and some of the teachers as we had enjoyed science days, sports events and school productions at Malvern College for several years, which made it much easier.” Lauren found it easy as well. Many of her friends from TDM joined her, and during the first week of term all Year 9 pupils boarded at school. “It was a brilliant way to get to know everyone,” she says.
Alongside making friends with a truly international cohort of new faces, life at Malvern College has provided a wealth of challenges and experiences. Danai particularly values the House system. “Having somewhere to retire to, even as a day boy, allows me to mix with older years and build friendships and camaraderie,” he explains. “There is a tremendous house spirit. Everybody looks after each other and they are always there to encourage and motivate you.”
The House system acts as a ‘Safe Harbour’ for pupils, providing a familiar social structure that mirrors the nurturing environment of The Downs Malvern.
Excellence in Sport: National Finals and Beyond
Lauren has been particularly inspired by the quality of the sports programme at Malvern College, which has seen her work with experienced coaches in one-to-one sessions and follow a personalised strength and conditioning plan. One of her favourite experiences so far has been taking part in Malvern College’s Race the Sun event, where pupils start at an unknown location at sunrise, moving through different checkpoints and finishing at the top of the Beacon at sunset while raising money for charity. However, she has also enjoyed a variety of unique experiences further afield, including cricket tours to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Looking ahead, Danai is excited by the freedom to shape his own academic path. “Being able to choose subjects I enjoy means I can focus on what I am passionate about and really push myself. I’m really keen to take advantage of the opportunities that I have here and to discover what I’m capable of.” he says. Before studying A levels in maths, economics and physics, Lauren is particularly excited for the three-week, entirely student-led Nordic Expedition this summer with the Outdoor Education department, where she will be cycling and kayaking across Scandinavia!
