This week, The Downs Malvern was named STEM Project of the Year at the Worcestershire Education Awards. While we are incredibly proud of this recognition, the award itself reflects something much deeper: a long-standing commitment to making science, technology, engineering and mathematics feel relevant, engaging and accessible to every child.
At The Downs Malvern, STEM is not confined to a single subject or lesson. It is woven throughout school life, encouraging pupils to think critically and apply their learning in meaningful ways.
STEM as a Way of Thinking
We believe STEM education should go beyond knowledge and focus on developing a mindset. From an early age, pupils are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and understand how things work.
Rather than presenting science or mathematics as abstract concepts, we ground learning in real-world contexts. This helps pupils to see the purpose behind what they are learning and to view themselves as capable problem solvers.
By embedding STEM across the curriculum, we create an environment where curiosity is valued and exploration is part of everyday school life.
Learning Through Real Experience
One of the most distinctive features of STEM at The Downs Malvern is the opportunity for pupils to learn through hands-on experience.
At the heart of this is the Downs Light Railway, established in 1925 and still in operation today. As one of the oldest miniature steam railways in the world, it provides a unique environment where pupils can engage directly with mechanical engineering. Working alongside adults, they develop an understanding of operation and maintenance while taking on real responsibility.
This practical approach extends into the classroom through projects such as the Great Egg Launch, where pupils work in teams to design and build devices capable of launching an egg over distance without it breaking. Along the way, they explore key principles such as force, trajectory and materials, learning to test ideas, analyse outcomes and refine their designs.
Pupils also take part in a Morgan Experience Day, where a Morgan sports car is brought to the school and used as the starting point for a series of engineering and design challenges. Pupils begin by carefully analysing the car’s structure, materials and design features before applying their observations to their own design tasks. Working in teams, they consider shape, strength and materials as they build and refine their own models. The experience encourages pupils to think like engineers, exploring how design decisions influence performance, efficiency and aesthetics.
These experiences bring STEM to life, helping pupils to see it not as theory, but as something tangible and relevant.
Technology, Coding and Creativity
Technology plays an increasingly important role in modern education, and our approach reflects this in a practical and engaging way.
From Year 5, pupils take part in a structured LEGO Robotics programme, using block coding to control vehicles, sensors and programmed responses. Working collaboratively, they develop logical thinking, sequencing skills and problem-solving strategies.
Importantly, this is not about passive use of technology. Pupils are encouraged to create, experiment and understand how digital systems work. By doing so, they gain confidence in using technology as a tool for innovation rather than simply consumption.
Exploring Beyond the Classroom
STEM learning at The Downs Malvern does not stop when lessons end. Through our Saturday Morning Hobbies Programme, pupils have the opportunity to explore science and engineering in a more informal, interest-led environment.
Activities such as Tinker Lab encourage experimentation and creativity. For example, pupils might take part in rocket launches, bridge-building challenges or independent design projects, making predictions, testing ideas and reflecting on their results.
These experiences nurture a genuine enthusiasm for STEM, allowing pupils to pursue their interests and develop the vital willingness to take risks and learn from failure.
Collaboration and Wider Opportunities
Partnerships play an important role in enriching our STEM provision. Through our relationship with Malvern College, pupils also regularly take part in specialist science workshops, gaining access to facilities and expertise beyond the Prep School setting.
We also look outward, hosting annual Year 5 Science Taster Days where pupils from local primary schools are invited to take part in practical experiments in our laboratories. This not only supports wider engagement with STEM but also encourages collaboration and shared learning between schools.
Mathematics is similarly approached as a collaborative discipline. Our Year 6 Maths Challenge brings together pupils from a range of schools to tackle logic and reasoning problems in teams, reinforcing the idea that maths is something to be explored and applied.
Building Confidence for the Future
The impact of this approach is clear in the confidence and curiosity of our pupils. Engagement in robotics, engineering projects and enrichment activities remains consistently high, and pupils frequently reflect on how hands-on learning helps them understand complex ideas more clearly.
More importantly, they begin to see STEM as something they can do, not something reserved for others.
In a world that is constantly evolving, this confidence is invaluable. Whether pupils go on to pursue STEM-related pathways or not, the ability to think critically, solve problems and approach challenges with curiosity will serve them well in any field.
