7 Ways Outdoor Play Supports Early Childhood Development

In a world filled with screens and digital distractions, it’s easy to forget that perhaps the most powerful learning environment is right outside the door.

At The Downs Malvern, outdoor learning plays a huge part in complementing indoor learning. Whether it’s exploring nature in Forest School, caring for animals in our smallholding, or the simple joy of running freely through our 55 acres, every moment outside shapes confident, curious and resilient children, particularly during the early years of outdoor play.

Here are seven ways outdoor play lays the strongest foundations for life:

1. Building Physical Strength and Coordination

Whether running on grass, clambering up a tree or balancing on a log/branch, these experiences are essential for building the gross motor skills that underpin lifelong physical development. At the same time, collecting sticks, threading leaves or digging in the soil develops the fine motor control that supports dexterity in everything from handwriting to playing piano. These movements support the developmental skills fostered by outdoor play.

Across our campus, children enjoy age-appropriate climbing structures, woodland areas and wide-open spaces that encourage every type of movement. These daily adventures build strength, stamina and coordination in ways few indoor settings could replicate.

2. Boosts Confidence and Independence

The outdoors is full of challenges and opportunities that allow children to experience risk in a managed, supportive environment.

Every time a child succeeds outside, their self-belief grows. Even when something doesn’t go to plan, they’re developing resilience and problem-solving. Here at The Downs Malvern, freedom and guidance go hand in hand; children explore, experiment and learn to trust themselves, with expert staff close by to ensure that risks remain purposeful, and safety is maintained.

3. Enhances Communication and Teamwork

Outdoor play rarely happens in silence. Children naturally form groups, negotiate roles and work together to achieve shared goals, whether carrying branches for a den, inventing a new game or navigating a muddy slope.

From Nursery through to Year 8, pupils at The Downs Malvern collaborate instinctively, developing the communication, listening and leadership skills that underpin lifelong teamwork. These lessons in cooperation can’t be replicated in an exercise book; they grow organically through play.

4. Sparks Curiosity and Critical Thinking

Nature is the ultimate enquiry-based classroom, and these outdoor activities for children encourage enquiry-based learning. A beetle scuttling across a log, a mushroom springing up overnight, or the simple question of “why is the sky orange this evening?” all spark curiosity and invite children to investigate.

Forest School leaders use these moments to encourage observation, questioning and exploration, which form the foundations of scientific thinking. It’s why many of our pupils develop such a strong early love of discovery, one that later flourishes in our laboratories and through hands-on Hobbies like engineering on the Downs Light Railway.

5. Supports Emotional Regulation

There’s a reason so many adults head for a countryside walk to “clear their heads.” The calming effect of nature is well documented, and children benefit even more. Fresh air, movement and time in green spaces help them manage emotions, reduce stress and restore focus.

Teachers at The Downs Malvern often notice how outdoor play brings balance to the school day, and time spent outside helps children self-regulate and enter  the classroom settled, calm and ready to learn.

6. Encourages Creativity and Imagination

A stick in the woods isn’t just a stick. In one child’s hand it becomes a sword; in another’s, a fishing rod; in another’s, a wand. Outdoors, there are no limits and children are free to invent, role-play and create entire worlds from the simplest of materials.

This kind of imaginative play is vital in early childhood. It builds storytelling skills, flexible thinking and confidence in self-expression. Whether pretending to be explorers in Forest School or inventing new playground games, pupils at The Downs Malvern learn that creativity thrives when imagination leads the way.

7. Fosters a Lifelong Connection to Nature

One of the greatest gifts we can give children is a deep respect for the natural world. Outdoor play nurtures environmental awareness at the age when it matters most.

Pupils learn to care for living things, from planting vegetables in the market garden to feeding animals on the smallholding. They see first-hand how ecosystems work and why protecting the environment is vital. This early connection fosters eco-conscious citizens who carry those values throughout life.

Our commitment to sustainability was recently recognised at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival, where pupils won two awards for their garden installation, a project designed and planted by the children. Their achievement reflects not only horticultural skill but a genuine appreciation of nature that begins in the earliest years. We were also delighted to have been awarded Best Eco Initiative recently in the Muddy Stilettos Best School Awards.

Outdoor Learning at The Downs Malvern

What sets The Downs Malvern apart is how deeply outdoor play is woven into daily life. For our youngest children in Mini Malvern Nursery, it begins with sensory play in natural spaces, from mud kitchens to woodland corners, where exploration and discovery happen every day as part of our early years outdoor education approach.

In the Pre-Prep and Junior Prep, Forest School sessions are an integral part of the week. Children learn practical skills, take measured risks and discover the joy of teamwork in the woods.

By the time pupils move into the Prep School, the benefits are clear: they’re physically confident, socially aware, imaginative and ready to take on new challenges. Whether building resilience through sports, taking part in eco-projects or working on the Downs Light Railway, they have already developed a whole-child foundation that began in the outdoors.
