Happy children learn best, and the combination of high levels of enthusiasm, self-motivation and skilled teaching ensures children of all abilities at the Downs Malvern make excellent progress in their knowledge and understanding across the curriculum.

A core curriculum from Early Years up to Year 6, broadly in line with the National Curriculum, is enhanced with specialist Science teaching, Humanities teaching that encompasses world history from cave art to the 21st century, high standards in foreign languages, Music and dedicated Drama lessons that build on classroom learning, and educational visits and events that broaden children’s understanding.

In Years 7 and 8 the curriculum is further enhanced with all pupils learning two foreign languages, Latin, computer coding, thinking skills and debating, adding further to pupils’ outstanding communication skills. Pupils are prepared for a wide range of senior schools through Common Entrance or scholarship.

Standards in Literacy and Maths are assured through standardised tests. In all subjects, assessment is built into teaching and learning in a virtuous circle of the highest quality, reinforced by frequent reporting and Parent Consultations.

Throughout the school, a thorough grounding in the curriculum balanced by the pleasure of intellectual challenge and creativity lead to exemplary attitudes to learning, with children taking initiative and responsibility. Specialist staff work alongside pupils and teachers to provide individual learning support so that all children can achieve their potential.
