The Great Egg Launch 2023

The Great Egg Launch 2023

Saturday 4th March 2023 saw the highlight of the school calendar, The Great Egg Launch 2023! Teams were judged in four areas: Distance, Engineering ‘Eggspertise’ (designing and constructing a device capable of launching an egg over a distance – the egg must survive the journey!), Style of Launch and Flight, and Accuracy (using a target). The four categories are combined to form an overall score out of 40; it is not necessarily the egg that travels the furthest that wins the competition!

We had an extraordinary 11 entries this year with some wonderful team and launcher names:

Team Eggstreme wth Eggmelia, Team Mess with The Eggmazing Launcher 5001 (an upgrade on last year’s 5000 model), Team Beggoscegg with The B.O.M., Happy Eggs with Happy Landings, the Eggy Meft with the The Meft Launcher, Team Mac Eggs with The Highland Fling, Team Fried Our Hardest with The Eggcelerator, Team Wannilo with Shell-Shocked, The Teggs-As Rangers with their Rapid Article Accelerator, Eggward and the Omelettes with Kineggtic and, last but by no means least, the Trickegg-Borns with The Eggmuteer,

This year, points for style were high and most of the ‘ooohs’ came from the crowd rather than the other type of ‘ooze’ from any cracked passengers! Not one team managed to land on the target but many came close.

My personal highlight was Hallum’s egg (very) narrowly avoiding his mother, in what resulted in an award for Most ‘Speggtacular’ Launch!

After much deliberation from the judges, two teams, The Eggy Meft and Mac Eggs couldn’t be separated for second place, the latter scoring highly for the addition of some atmospheric bagpipe music during the launch. However, there could only be one winner, and the Champion Egg Launcher 2023 was… wait for it… drum roll… Team Mess. Congratulations to Jess and Maita – thoroughly well-deserved champions.

This was a fabulous event, and well done to all who took part for the tremendous display of ingenuity and sportsmanship.
