The annual Downs Malvern Great Egg Launch was held on 29th Feggruary 2020.
After weeks of rain and storms, the bad weather finally relented and the great egg yolk in the sky decided to show its face. The weather, despite a brisk hegg wind, was perfect.
There were a record-cracking 13 entries this year and a wealth of different designs from sling-shots to tregguchets and even the odd child’s arm! It was slightly emotional, as several teams have been competing for a number of years, but these retiring Year 8 entrants were all keen to go out in a blaze of egglory!
The event began with last year’s champions, the Crisp family, aka The Grand Eggxit. To the speggtators surprise they placed the ‘targegg’ behind the launcher! This proved a wise move, as ‘The Whipper’ languidly unfolded to release the egg directly up into the sky before a loud call of ‘Heads’!
The Sneyvill-Borns unleashed a fine delivery from The Launcher, eggstending to an impressive distance of 27m.
The highly knowledgeable Team Eggsactly unleashed Goliath, a giant in name but only manegging a distance of 3m.
The very safety conscious and scientifeggally minded Team Eggstraordinary fired egnarO, and their rocket shot gracefully to a distance of 7m.
Ratatatatatatata fired from their meggnificent bazooka, Ratatouille, to land splat in the middle of the targegg’s yolk only to find that their egg had broken!
Our scholars, under the name of Embryonic Splat performed increggibly well with Football, recording the joint highest distance of 27m.
Team Alto released the power of The Altometer, and a beautiful flight treggectory, resulted in a fine distance just shy of the targegg.
Jumptastic fired from one of the longest elastegg powered bazookas, Jump Cannon, we have seen to date.
Code Club (Best Laid Plans) produced a magnificent launch from The Ovolution, rocketing into the air, and then… going out of bounds… I believe for the third year running!
Team Super Eggs after realising that their Super Duper Catapult had one tiny flaw (launch vehicle would not fit!) resorted to muscle power, ending up with an impressive deggree of egguracy but a less impressive broken shell!
Junk Eggs, thanks to Freggie locking himself away in a shed for several weeks, unleashed Trebushell, wildly inaccurate but launched with grace and beauty.
The Scramblers with a few fevered bashes from a wrench finally managed to get Humpty to release his egg and it arced to a distance of 7m, narrowly missing the targegg.
Finally, a valiant Ova Easy, after a launcher breaking disaster late on Friday made use of their muscles to release their Ballista by hand.
The judges, Mr Lamberton, Mr Vaughan and Mrs Carmichael got their heggs together before the results were announced:
The newly added prize for most Speggtacular Launch went to the most speggtacular failure – Code Club and Winstanleys (Best Laid Plans).
In the main competition, third place was given to some of our Year 8s, Jack, Mack and Will (The Sneyvill-Borns).
In second place we had the highly eggurate Year 8 team, Ratatatatatatata: Lucy, Luca, Amelie, Ted and Diana.
Our winner had everything: great design, superb distance and pure style. The winners of the Great Egg Launch 2020 are Albie and Otto (Team Alto).
Well done to EGGERYONE who entered. This was a fabulous event and each and ovary team played its part.
THANK YOU ALL, AND SEE YOU IN 2021
