It was music to our ears to hear plans have been approved and work is now underway to refurbish the Music School at The Downs Malvern.
The upgrade will transform the music centre into a state-of-the-art, acoustically superior teaching space. Architect drawings highlight the central, focal classroom that will be used by all year groups and classes. Other features of the new music school include:
- Seven individual practice rooms
- Four ensemble spaces for small group sessions and music tuition
- Innovative space solutions for instruments to be stored
The Downs Malvern has an excellent musical pedigree with many past and current students gaining music scholarships at prestigious senior schools. The range of musical instruments taught at The Downs is extensive and incorporates all the orchestral instruments, as well as piano, percussion, classical and rock guitar and singing. From EYFS to Year 8 pupils can receive lessons on these instruments, with a number achieving excellent passes at Grade 6 and above.
Music and singing are both integral parts of school life. All pupils are taught music as part of the curriculum, and we have a thriving orchestra, 3 choirs, a number of ensembles and at least one musical production per year.
Headmaster Andy Nuttall said, “The Music School refurbishment is just one of the many exciting developments taking place this summer. The space has been designed to offer our pupils a fantastic environment in which to play and practice musical instruments and give our whole school community a light and modern facility in which to learn. Whether it’s Music and Movement with Early Years or Rock Band preparing for a concert, this is one classroom I’m excited to hear the noise coming from!”
