The School aims to inspire children of all ages to explore and develop their creativity. We believe that the development of visual literacy is significantly important in today’s society.

Overlooking the Malvern Hills, the Art Studio at The Downs Malvern could not have a more inspirational setting.

All children attend a double lesson each week, but there are opportunities to extend their time by joining a creative hobby or extra Art activity on Saturdays or weekday afternoons. The making and painting of stage scenery and props for the many school productions is a regular creative focus.

There are competitions with prizes awarded for different age groups each year. The annual summer art competition attracts a great number of entries from pupils of all ages. Examples of recent themes: ‘Inspired by a City anywhere in the World, ‘Amazing Colours’, ‘Through the Window’.

Art gallery visits are undertaken, locally, nationally and internationally. There have been trips to Rome, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Birmingham Art Gallery, Compton Verney and Worcester Museum. Senior pupils visit Tate St Ives during their annual Geography Field Trip to Cornwall.

Professional artists are invited to run practical workshops and share their expertise. For example, pupils learnt about oil painting through an Art and Philosophy workshop recently.

Art is displayed in abundance around the school so that all can view and appreciate the children's creativity. Their work is promoted through local and national art exhibitions and competitions. The school has a fascinating collection of paintings that reflects its own unique and important artistic legacy.
