At The Downs Malvern, we are very lucky to have our own AstroTurf pitch here on site. In the Autumn Term, the girls play hockey with up to four Senior 7-a-side teams (Years 7 and 8), four teams at Under 10 and Under 11 level with girls from Years 5 and 6, and several teams at Under 8 and Under 9 age. We also play the occasional 11-a-side game at Senior level.

In the Lent Term, the boys also take up the ‘sticks’, with similar teams selected. We aim for up to two competitive matches a week, along with the inter-house competitions at the end of the season.

Both the boys and girls have enjoyed great successes in recent years, with our teams regularly winning their respective County tournaments, thereby going on to represent Herefordshire at the Regional West of England Finals day held at Millfield. The boys and girls also regularly compete against bigger ‘hockey’ Prep schools at the National IAPS regional competitions. The Downs Malvern also hosts Under 11 and Under 13 tournaments for local Prep schools over at the magnificent facilities of Malvern College.

We also have regular individual success with players regularly participating at JDC (Development) and JAC (Academy), and this year we have a number of children who have been selected to go onto JRPC (Regional) trials.

In 2017 and 2019, the boys and girls enjoyed two tremendously successful hockey development tours to Rotterdam and Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

All of the staff at The Downs Malvern have a passion for the game and many years’ experience in Prep school sport. We are also fortunate enough to be able to call upon further expert coaching from the hockey coaches at Malvern College.
