The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) consists of two classes: the Nursery, taught by Miss Sophia Leonard catering for our three to four year olds; and Reception class taught by Mrs Louise Hannis, teaching those four year old children celebrating their fifth birthday that academic year.

In the Nursery and Reception, we follow the EYFS guidelines which qualify us to receive nursery grant funding for our three- and four-year-old children as laid down by the government. Here, there are seven areas of learning and development that shape our educational programme and guide our planning ideas. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for establishing their capacity to learn, form relationships, and flourish. These prime areas are:

Communication and Language
Physical Development
Personal, social and emotional development

Children are also supported in the four specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. These are:

Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design

Emphasis is placed on active, play-based learning, with a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities. The children engage in creative activities, songs, stories, rôle-play and physical play, and can use the secure Early Years garden for outdoor play, as well as the extensive school grounds and Forest School.

Each week, the children join in their weekly French lesson with Prep school staff, which encompasses movement, dance and song! Your child’s 'Key Person' plans the next steps in the individual child's learning journey based on his or her interests and stage of development. Progress and development are recorded in EYFS Profile Books, using photographs and written comments.

The EYFS children are involved in department trips, assemblies, whole school activities, theme weeks, special educational days, listening to visiting speakers, fundraising events and all Christmas and summer productions. We are proud of our youngest pupils and welcome them to join in with all the fabulous and exciting activities we offer here at The Downs Malvern.

"Early Years .... where the fun never ends and the learning begins! We pride ourselves on providing an active, fun and enabling environment full of opportunities to think critically, problem solve and learn. A place where what makes us unique helps us thrive and positive relationships commence."  Mrs Louise Hannis - Reception Teacher.
